Skillselion: what an install-ranked skills directory rewards
Skillselion is a directory of Claude Code, Codex and Cursor skills and MCP servers that ranks 59,343 skills by real installs from the skills.sh registry. For makers, it shows what launch distribution looks like when the leaderboard runs on usage instead of upvotes.

Most launch platforms rank by votes cast on launch day. Skillselion ranks by something harder to stage: installs. Its catalog tracked 59,343 Claude Code skills and 8,427 MCP servers on 28 July 2026, refreshed daily from source repositories, and the order on the page comes from install counts reported by the skills.sh registry.
That changes what a launch means. You cannot rally friends to install a skill they will never use, so day-one theatrics buy less. What compounds instead is the same thing this leaderboard rewards: a listing that stays accurate while real usage accumulates.
The numbers a maker should actually read
The skills leaderboard publishes its own methodology next to the data: across the 600 most-installed skills, the median sits at 159,314 installs, 79 percent had a source-repository update in the last 30 days, and forks that canonicalize to an original are collapsed into it. The page states plainly that nothing on it is paid placement.
The top of the table on capture day: Find Skills by vercel-labs at 3 million installs, Frontend Design by anthropics at 708,000, Grill Me by mattpocock behind them. The fastest riser was lark-shared, up 345 installs in the tracking window. Small, specific, checkable numbers, which is exactly what a launch page should carry too.
What this means if you ship a skill or an MCP server
Treat a skills directory listing like any other launch surface: the README is your landing page, the install command is your call to action, and repository freshness is your uptime badge. With 79 percent of ranked skills updated inside 30 days, a stale repo reads as abandonment fast.
- Ship the listing before the announcement, so installs from launch traffic count from hour one.
- Keep one canonical repo. Forks get collapsed into the original, so spreading installs across mirrors only dilutes you.
- Put a dated changelog line in the README. Freshness is a visible ranking surface, not housekeeping.

Launchelion lists AI tools with real launch dates and votes from signed-in users; Skillselion lists agent skills with real install counts. Different objects, same conviction: a ranking is only worth reading when the numbers underneath it are real rows, not editorial mood.
